Drag Queen Wig Care & Maintenance Guide

Posted by Queen of Drag on

A great wig is an investment. Treat it right and it'll perform with you for years. Treat it badly and you'll be ordering a replacement before your second show. Here's everything you need to know about keeping your wigs in show-ready condition.

Store Them Properly — Always

The number one mistake queens make with wigs is throwing them in a bag or a drawer after a show. That's a one-way ticket to tangles, crushed fibers, and a shape that no amount of styling will fix.

The right way to store a wig:

  • Always place it on a wig stand or foam head when not in use
  • If you're travelling, use a wig box or a clean carrier bag stuffed gently with tissue paper to maintain the shape
  • Keep wigs out of direct sunlight — UV light fades both synthetic fiber and human hair over time
  • Store away from heat sources

Build your wig collection properly from the start: one stand per wig. It's a small investment that extends the life of each piece significantly.

Brushing — The Right Way

This is where most queens go wrong. Brushing a wig like you'd brush your own hair will destroy the fiber in a matter of weeks.

The golden rules:

  • Always use a wide-tooth comb or a wig brush — never a standard hairbrush
  • Always brush from the ends upward, working your way gradually toward the roots — never root to tip
  • Hold the wig at the roots while you brush to avoid pulling the weft
  • For curly or wavy wigs, use your fingers to detangle first before any brush or comb touches it
  • Never brush a wet wig — let it dry completely first

Washing Your Wig

How often you wash depends on how often you wear it. A wig worn weekly needs washing roughly once a month. One worn occasionally can go much longer between washes.

Step-by-step washing for synthetic wigs:

  1. Detangle gently before washing
  2. Fill a basin with cool water — never hot, which damages synthetic fibers
  3. Add a small amount of wig shampoo or very mild baby shampoo
  4. Submerge the wig and swirl gently — never scrub or wring
  5. Rinse thoroughly with cool water until the water runs clear
  6. Press gently with a towel to remove excess water — never twist or wring
  7. Place on a wig stand and allow to air dry completely — never use a hairdryer on low or no heat setting unless the wig is specifically heat resistant

For human hair wigs: the process is similar but you can use regular shampoo and conditioner, and you have more flexibility with heat drying.

Heat Styling — Know Your Fiber

Not all synthetic wigs can handle heat. Using a flat iron or curling iron on the wrong fiber will melt it instantly and permanently.

Before applying any heat:

  • Check the product listing for "heat resistant" or "high temperature fiber"
  • Start at the lowest heat setting (around 120°C) and work up slowly
  • Always use a heat protectant spray, even on heat-resistant synthetics
  • Never exceed 180°C on synthetic fiber

Standard synthetic fiber (not heat resistant) can only be styled with:

  • Cold water and styling products
  • Steam very carefully and from a distance
  • Foam rollers left overnight

Human hair wigs can handle the same heat as natural hair — flat irons, curling wands, the full toolkit.

Dealing With Tangles

Even with the best care, tangles happen — especially with long straight wigs after a show. Don't panic.

  • Spray with a wig detangling spray or a mix of water and a few drops of conditioner in a spray bottle
  • Work from the ends up with a wide-tooth comb, taking small sections
  • For severe tangles, patience beats force every time — pulling will snap fibers

When a Wig Is Beyond Saving

Sometimes a wig has had its day. Signs it's time to retire it:

  • Fibers are permanently matted or frizzed and won't detangle
  • The lace front is torn or the hairline is pulled out
  • The color has faded significantly or become patchy
  • It's lost its original shape and won't hold a style

At that point, it's time for a replacement rather than a rescue — and that's not a failure, it's just part of the rotation.
