Your first pair of drag queen heels is one of the most important purchases you'll make as a performing queen. Get it right and you'll have the confidence to own any stage. Get it wrong and you'll be wobbling through your lip-sync while desperately wishing you could sit down.
Here's everything you need to know before you buy.
Start With the Platform, Not the Total Height
New queens make the same mistake every time: they see a 20cm heel and picture themselves towering over the competition. What they don't account for is the platform.
A shoe with a 5cm platform and a 20cm heel only puts your foot at a 15cm angle — far more manageable than it sounds. A true stiletto with no platform and a 15cm heel is actually much harder to walk in. When you're starting out, look for a high platform with a moderate heel-to-platform ratio — it gives you the height without the ankle-breaking angle.
For your first pair, aim for:
- Platform: 4–6cm minimum
- Total height: 12–16cm
- Heel style: chunky or block heel over stiletto
Get the Fit Right Before Anything Else
Drag heels don't follow standard sizing. Most queens find they need to go half a size to a full size up from their usual shoe size — your foot needs room to spread when you're performing, and you'll likely be wearing thick tights underneath.

- Round toe platforms — more comfortable, easier to walk in, works with almost any costume.
- Thigh-high platform boots — maximum drama, perfect for performers who want the shoe to be the statement.
- Rhinestone or glitter heels — adds sparkle from the ground up. A great first choice if your outfits tend toward sequins and glamour.
- Ankle boots — more stable than open shoes, great for energetic performances.
Think About the Stage Before You Think About the Look
The most beautiful heel in the world is useless if you can't perform in it. Ask yourself:
- Will you be dancing or doing complex choreography? Go for a lower, more stable platform or an ankle boot with good support.
- Will you mostly be posing and walking? You have more freedom to go higher and more dramatic.
- What's the stage surface? Smooth floors are harder to grip — avoid very narrow heel tips on polished stages.
- How long is your show? For anything over two hours, comfort matters as much as aesthetics.

You don't need ten pairs of heels to start. You need two:
Pair 1 — Your workhorse: A versatile platform in black or nude that goes with everything. This is your rehearsal shoe and your backup for any outfit.
